# Why Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two Factor Authentication adds an extra layer of security to your TestingBot account. After entering your email and password, you'll also need to supply a one-time verification code.

TestingBot supports two methods for generating that code: a time-based authenticator app (TOTP) or an SMS message to your mobile phone. We recommend an authenticator app — it works without cell coverage and is generally more secure than SMS.

With 2FA enabled, even if your password is compromised, an attacker would still need access to your authenticator app or phone to sign in.

## Enable 2FA

Log into your TestingBot account and go to [Security](https://testingbot.com/members/user/security) in your account settings.
Click the [Enable 2FA](https://testingbot.com/members/2fa/enable) button to begin the setup.

On the setup page, you can choose either method:

- **Authenticator app (recommended):** scan the QR code with any TOTP-compatible app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password or Microsoft Authenticator, then enter the 6-digit code it generates to verify.
- **SMS:** enter your mobile phone number with country code (for example, a US number starts with `+1`). We'll send a verification code via SMS that you enter to verify.

Once 2FA is enabled, every subsequent login will prompt you for a verification code after your email and password.

## Authenticator App

Any TOTP-compatible authenticator app will work with TestingBot 2FA, including Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, and Microsoft Authenticator.

Scan the QR code shown on the [Enable 2FA](https://testingbot.com/members/2fa/enable) page to register TestingBot with your app. The app will then generate a new 6-digit code every 30 seconds, which you enter when signing in.

## Disabling 2FA

Log into your TestingBot account and go to [Security](https://testingbot.com/members/user/security) in your account settings.
Click the **Disable 2FA** button to turn off two-factor authentication for your account.
